Sugar Blues – The Dark Side of Sweet

William Duffy’s book SUGAR BLUES should have been the death knell to the exorbitant use of sugar (sucrose). Of course, half a century earlier Price and Pottenger (NUTRITION AND PHYSICAL DEGENERATION) had scientifically documented the role of sugar and white flour as major contributors to DISEASE, ranging from dental decay to atherosclerosis and cancer, especially of the colon. Much of this took place before the plague of McDonald’s and its fast-food clones, the increased processing of food and the maddening array of artificial additives.

And sugar certainly contributes to the epidemic of depression.

There are only 4 primary tastes: sweet, sour, bitter and salty. Most of the overtones to these tastes come from the wide array of aromas that are part of food’s enticement. It is hard to fathom why such artificial and unhealthy practices as additions of sugar, white flour and white rice became staples. None of these is NATURAL. All are much inferior to the original products. All are deficient in fiber, minerals and vitamins, all of which are essential for health and life. White flour has NO fiber and is oxymoronically ‘enriched’ with one-seventh the normal content of B 6. Sugar has ZERO, ZIP, NO nutrient VALUE. Indeed, it sucks vital nutrients from whatever other sources you have.

ARTIFICIAL sweetners such as aspartame, ‘UNEQUAL’ and Splenda are chemical slop at best and toxins at worst. These and saccharine are not food and should be abandoned by anyone with an IQ of 90 and above. And for those with lower IQ, these nonsense chemicals may be even worse! Aspartame at least significantly worsens obesity, migraine, epilepsy and hypertension. And constantly stimulating your sweet tooth is a major assistant to developing insulin malfunctions.

Are there any good, healthy sweets? Yes, of course. Fruits and honey. For almost all people these are healthier and more desirable than any other sweet-tasting foods. Honey is sweeter than sugar, tastes better and is an excellent antioxidant.

Incidentally, xylitol has been touted as a great substitute and it may be minimally better than sugar. However, it does raise blood sugar, cause release of insulin and has led to serious complications even in dogs! Its only use might be as a nasal spray in children with frequent ear infections, where regular use does appear to be helpful.

Fructose is also not healthier although it is twice as sweet as sugar so that less is needed to satisfy sweetness.

Now, if you are really healthy, eat an otherwise good diet, etc, I do not feel a need to be a total nihilist. For healthy people an occasional dose of sugar may be fine. Especially if it is in dark chocolate!

EP Magazine interviews Dr. Norm Shealy

A holistic approach to pain has been my focus for many, many years, and I have treated well over 30,000 patients who have been failed by conventional medicine.

EP: What inspired you take this approach?

Dr. Shealy: Conventional medicine excels in acute illness and emergency medicine, but its approaches to chronic disease remain woefully inadequate. As early as 1971, I recognized that I personally would not want to see any physician that I knew if I had a chronic disease. It teaches patients how to detach from those feelings through self-control and self-regulation.

EP: What do you mean by detachment?

Dr. Shealy: I don’t let myself get upset over things that I cannot change. In order to relax, we need to learn to have total control over what’s happening inside our body. That’s what Biogenics teaches: how to live in present time. The techniques include learning to breathe through the skin, circulating the electrical energy and expanding the electromagnetic energy field around your body.

EP: What are the applications for Biogenics?

Dr. Shealy: Anxiety and depression, of course. We need to learn to control our hang-ups, our anger, guilt, anxiety, depression. Everything is a result of a fear. Fear makes you anxious, and anxiety can make you depressed if it becomes more than you can handle. There’s only one solution: detach. Detaching from those things you cannot change. We’re currently developing a program to teach nurses, counselors and psychologists how to use Biogenics for health enhancement.

EP: What is the future of the Shealy-Sorin Wellness clinic?

EAT for HEALTH

80% of all food sold in this country is JUNK and/or poison. Sugar, trans-fats, fructose, refined, altered, substitutes, MSG added are, at best, junk. Pure poison is all herbicides, pesticides, aluminum, glyphosate, arsenic, etc. Wheat is the single greatest toxic, poisoned food.

Unless you are raising your own food, it is almost impossible to know what to buy. Start by avoiding all fast food slop houses and almost all packaged food on the center aisles of stores. Buy the best fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts you can find. Starchy veggies are not needed, but sweet potatoes are the best of that category. If you can find a farmers’ market, buy meat there. Get the best fresh fish possible. For some people milk, cheese and eggs are fine. PLAIN yogurt, especially Greek, is great. Coffee and tea up to 3 cups a day are fine. Smoothies, especially with whey protein isolate and fruits and veggies are super. Dark chocolate, up to one ounce a day is fine. Have breakfast every day; easiest is a smoothie.

NON-CHLORINATED, NON-FLUORIDATED water is essential, averaging one-half ounce for every pound of weight.

Ideally, for most adults, because of the universal toxicity of the environment, 25 mg of B complex, 5000 units of D 3, 2000 mg of vitamin C, and 10 mg of astaxanthin should be taken daily.

Health is Simple

If everyone in the U.S. had the basic health habits, average life expectancy would go from current 78 to 100! 97.3% of Americans have one to 5 bad habits:

  • Smoking—22% of Americans
  • Body Mass Index 25 to 29—35%; BMI 30 or above another 35%
  • Eating less than 5 servings of fruits and veggies daily—90+%
  • Exercising less than 30 minutes 5 days a week—90%
  • Sleeping less than 7 hours of sleep a 24-hour day—35% or more

Each Bad habit can shorten your life 7 or more years, and negatively impact the quality of your life for many more. To me, the loss of health from unhealthy habits is all I need to know to avoid sloppy, stupid health habits.

My essential health habits for everyone are:

  • No smoking
  • Body mass index 18 to 24
  • Eat at least 5 servings daily of fruits and veggies
  • Exercise at least 20 minutes 5 days a week
  • Sleep 7 to 8 hours every
  • Take vitamin D3 a minimum of 5000 units to 10,,ooo units daily
  • Take a good multivitamin/mineral with at least 25 mg of B complex daily
  • Take 1000 to 3000 mg of Omega 3 daily
  • Take at least 2000 mg of vitamin C daily
  • Take astaxanthin 10 mg daily
  • Take gamma/delta Tocotrienols, 100 mg daily
  • Do at least 20 minutes daily of self-regulation, such as autogenic training

If everyone adopted the essential health habits, average life expectancy would increase to 100 within 25 years and we would have a minimum of 75% less illness, need 99% less drugs, need 75% less medical services.

Start with one habit you are willing to change. Work on it for a week or a month before you tackle the entire list! The one antidote to stress that is easiest to introduce is autogenic training.
