Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, SLS, is a caustic surfactant and widely used detergent, that appears in everything from oven-cleaners and carpet glue to the vast majority of toothpastes, shaving creams, shampoos, soaps, and even many DRUGS, WHERE IT IS — USED TO ”CLEAN” GELATIN CAPSULES.
It is disguised under dozens of aliases, such as sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS. It is the ”standard” for assessing skin irritation in allergic patches. CELL DEATH is ”the most pronounced” effect at concentrations of well below 1% SLS, especially in the mucosa of the mouth.
Several years ago, I was diagnosed as having leukoplakia, a precancerous lesion, inside my cheeks, after months of burning pain there. When I learned that it was well-known that sodium lauryl sulfate was a frequent CAUSE of canker sores, I searched for toothpaste free of SLS.
You will search far and wide to find a toothpaste free of SLS!!
Tom’s ”natural” toothpastes ALL have either SLS or aluminum. All Colgate’s, Crest, even Arm and Hammer Baking Soda toothpastes contain this highly toxic substance.
Peelu is one of the few SLS-free types of toothpaste, available at health food stores but it does a terrible job cleaning teeth. The only two I have found that clean well and do not have aluminum or SLS are CloSys II (available at Walgreen’s) and Xyliwhitening™ (available at 888-242-6105). Within a few months of avoiding SLS, my mouth cleared!
One of the most interesting ”side-effects” of SLS is that it hardens the gelatin which encapsulates many drugs, making the capsule less dissolvable.
As a result, the availability of the drug varies — perhaps a good result for many drugs!
Since it irritates the skin, SLS ENHANCES absorption of almost anything through the skin.
Of course this poison is excellent for killing viruses, even AIDS. I need not mention the ”advantage” this toxic effect suggests to the PharmacoMafia!
Recognizing the significant frequency of skin irritation with SLS, consider its effects in shampoos. Many shampoos contain 50% SLS, leading to hair loss, irritation of the skin and burning of the eyes. Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, the play isn’t too bad.
Something to know: Using castor oil for cataracts: How might it help?
Almost all well-known shampoos are loaded with this poison. Since it irritates the skin, it makes the skin more permeable. There is good reason to be suspicious that it may accelerate cataracts. And it may help damage the brain when it is used over a long lifetime.
Products such as Body and Bath and even Oil of Olay – and don’t forget your ”natural” shampoos, such as Freeman’s Botanicals Natural Hair Care, and many body washes contain SLS. And, men, is the risk worth it for Just for Men? Not to mention Ivory Hand Dishwashing Liquid?
Many mouthwashes such as Listermint contain SLS. Viadent contains a somewhat lesser irritant PEG-40 sorbitan diisostearate.
The bottom line is READ THE LABEL!
That won’t do you any good in reading the label on capsules — after all, they were just bathed in it. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is just one of thousands of ”approved” poisons that do NOT make life better through chemistry.
