Or maybe you lived through 2020. It’s safe to say that 2020 alone was a stressful year for everyone across the globe and for various reasons.

With sickness running rampant, people losing their family members, jobs lost, and the financial burdens that came along with it, many were dealing with stress coming from every aspect of their life. Hard times fell upon the majority and stress typically follows behind hard times.

You might not have the ability to control the outside forces affecting your life, but you can learn to control how you respond to stress.

When finding the right approach to cope, stress management techniques can make a huge difference in your life.

Even better, you can train your brain to proactively combat stress, rather than deal with it in the moment. Read on to learn how!

What is stress?

list of common stressors

Stress can be summed up as your body’s reaction to any change in your life. It be physical or emotional. These changes can be to your physical wellbeing, your mental wellbeing, or your relationships.

Anything that happens in life and makes you feel overwhelmed can be considered stress or a stressful situation.

For example, if you have bills to pay and a family to take care of, you likely have stressors throughout each & every day.

Now, if you have a savings account that you can live off or you can easily get a new job quickly, you’d be dealing with acute stress. This is short-term stress that doesn’t last long. You might be stressed at the time but having a backup plan or quick fix could ease it.

Using that same scenario, if you were living paycheck to paycheck when you lost the job, bills are piling up, and you can’t find a job as quickly, that can turn into chronic stress. This type of stress can last for weeks or months. Your body becomes accustomed to living in a stressed-out state, and that is not good for you mentally or physically. It causes your relaxation response, your body’s natural way of calming down, to not function as it should.

Your body can naturally handle acute stress, but chronic stress throws everything out of order. When in this state, you are always on high alert and the chemicals being produced keep you in “fight-or-flight” mode. You can NOT be healthy when in this continuous state of chronic stress.

What type of problems can stress cause?

When you think of stress at the surface level, you might not think of it as a big deal. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

Your body is made to naturally handle acute stress, but chronic stress throws everything out of order. When in this state, you are always on high alert and the chemicals being produced keep you in “fight-or-flight” mode.

There are stages of stress, and they are: initial adaptation, wear and tear on the body, exhaustion and debilitation, and the final stage is disease and dysfunction.

Some symptoms of a body living under chronic stress are:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Aches & pains
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Weakened immune system
  • Trouble sleeping or relaxing
  • Skin issues
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Headaches
  • High blood pressure
  • Gastrointestinal problems

Did you know that stress is the primary cause of over 95% of all diseases?

These are only a few of the issues that chronic stress can cause. Unfortunately, there are many more, and some are more severe than others.

Even though stress starts in the mind, as you can see, it can trickle into every aspect of your life. Our Biogenics Online Course is the ultimate stress management tool!

Unhealthy coping responses to stress

If you’ve been living under chronic stress, you might not know it. This can keep you from handling it properly.

Some people turn to smoking or drinking to ease their pain. Others turn to prescription or illegal drugs to numb themselves. Maybe they drown their stress by staring at the TV for hours and hours at a time, not even paying attention to what they are watching. They are all looking for something, anything to take their mind away from what is stressing them out.

Stress is inevitable. Whether you’re dealing with the negative stress of a work-related issue or the positive stress of packing everything you own and moving into your dream home, your body needs to have a system in place for when stress hits. Enter stress management techniques & self-regulation!

Breath Exercise to Reduce Stress

Now this one may sound a bit self explanatory, but we find that most folks are “shallow breathers.”

Most of the day you are unaware of your breath. Your body automatically controls your breathing through the subconscious mind. The breath is shallow, barely filling the lungs full and never fully expelling.

When was the last time you thought about your breath today?

Taking a moment to focus on your breath is an incredible way to instantly begin neutralizing acute stress that comes throughout your day.

Here is a quick breath exercise to try that will take you only a minute or 2 and have you feeling amazing upon completion:

  1. Start by saying in your mind 3 times “My breathing is free and easy.”
  2. Now begin to turn your focus on your breath, just be aware of your breath. Hear it, feel it.
  3. Now draw in breath and expand as far as you can until your belly & chest are full.
  4.  Once full, slowly release the breath, until you expel every last bit of the breath.
  5. Repeat this breathing pattern for 5 more breaths.

How do you feel now?
Relaxed?
Calm?
Peaceful?
Happy?

This breathing exercise takes less than 1-2 minutes and can be done AS MANY times a day as you like! As a doctor, this is my “prescription” for you to take time for yourself, a couple moments a day, to follow this breathing pattern and begin watching as you neutralize your daily stressors!

A few great ways to remember to breathe deep daily are:

  1. Place sticky notes with a little reminder around your house, office or any place you frequent during the day.
  2. Set timed reminders on your phone.
  3. Meditate daily and become aware of your breath.
