What’s a Thyroid Gland and What Is Its Function?

diagram of what’s a thyroid gland

As a holistic doctor, I’m frequently asked this question. Although the question itself is simple, understanding the concept of what a thyroid gland is isn’t as simple as you may think. That’s because this little gland is responsible for maintaining the overall health and well-being of your body.

Before we dive into how important your thyroid gland is and how to improve your thyroid health, let’s talk more about what this gland is and its functions in your body.

What’s a Thyroid Gland and Why Do I Like to Call it Mighty?

This gland is a butterfly-shaped endocrine organ located around the “Adam’s apple” area of the neck underneath the skin. It controls many of your body’s important functions by producing and releasing specific hormones. These hormones regulate the metabolism, growth, and development of your body in general.

Impressively enough, this organ is also responsible for regulating heart rate, body temperature, and energy levels. That’s why maintaining the health of this tiny yet mighty organ is essential to ensure the proper functioning of your body.

What’s Your Thyroid Gland Responsible for EXACTLY?

Your thyroid makes and secretes hormones, let’s get more into detail and talk about the essential hormones produced:

  • Thyroxine (T4)

This is the primary hormone produced. Thyroxine indicates how healthy your thyroid is. Too much or too little can indicate disease.
  • Triiodothyronine (T3)

This hormone affects almost every physiological process in your body, focusing on development, metabolism, and body temperature. T3 is produced as a synthesis of T4.
  • Reverse triiodothyronine (RT3)

Your body produces very small amounts of this hormone, which reverses the effects of T3.
  • Calcitonin

This hormone helps regulate the amount of calcium in the body.

These 4 Hormones Affect the Following Bodily Functions DIRECTLY:

  • Metabolism
  • Heart rate
  • Breathing
  • Digestion
  • Body temperature
  • Brain development
  • Mental activity
  • Skin and bone maintenance
  • Fertility

Organs Affected by Poor Thyroid Health

Because it controls so many organs in your body, I like to think of the thyroid gland as a race car. So, if you have too much thyroid function, you’re going way too fast, which means crash and burn. If your thyroid’s going too slow you don’t have enough to even go the speed limit.

Let’s go from top to bottom and talk about some organs affected by your thyroid gland:

  • Brain

A brain with low thyroid functioning can lead to brain fog, depression, anxiety, stress, dementia, and slow thinking. Basically, all things related to brain dysfunction. Frequently, when the brain is not functioning as ideally as it should be, there is a very high chance and high risk that the thyroid gland is involved.
  • Lungs

The thyroid also affects the respiratory rate, the lungs, and the exchange of CO2.
  • Heart

Regarding the heart, the thyroid and the heart are very intimately connected. When the thyroid is functioning slowly, a person tends to have low blood pressure and low functioning in general. When it is fast, people tend to have a racing heart, palpitations, arrhythmias, and atrial fibrillation.
  • Liver

The liver is one of the essential organs in the human body, and again it is controlled and guided by the thyroid. A fast-functioning thyroid means your liver is working too fast, you are not processing, and storing, and you are not getting nutrients from food, which leads to constipation.

Thyroid Disorders that Impact Your Thyroid Health

Thyroid disorders are extremely common and affect millions of people every year. Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are the two most common disorders. Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough hormones. Hyperthyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland produces too many hormones.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism May Include:

  • weight gain
  • fatigue
  • depression
  • dry skin
  •  hair loss

On the Other Hand, Hyperthyroidism May Cause Symptoms Such As:

  • weight loss
  • rapid heartbeat
  • anxiety
  • insomnia

You must be aware of these conditions because leaving them untreated can lead to serious health problems, such as heart disease, osteoporosis, and infertility.

How to Ensure a Healthy Thyroid

Maintaining thyroid health is essential to prevent disease in your body. One way to ensure proper function without thyroid medication is with a balanced diet, focusing on iodine-rich foods such as seafood, dairy products, and eggs. Selenium, zinc, and vitamin D are also essential for your health.

Regular exercise will also help to maintain thyroid health. Physical activity increases metabolism and stimulates the production of thyroid hormones. It also helps to reduce stress levels.

Getting regular checkups will help ensure you maintain yourself in optimal condition.
