VITAMIN K 2
VITAMIN K 2—–Crucial for bone, artery and immune health!(c)
C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D.
At least since I began emphasizing the value of Vitamin D 3, I have known and mentioned that K 2 is a crucial co-factor in bone health. It turns out it is also essential in preventing and reversing atherosclerosis as well as having a broad immune-enhancing role.
Perhaps, its broadest need is in preventing and treating osteoporosis. Interestingly, the usual recommended dose of Vitamin K 2 is 100 to 200 mcg per day. However, it has been safely and effectively used at doses of 45 mg per day to treat osteoporosis, in conjunction with D 3. And K 2 is tremendously important in preventing the increase in osteoporosis caused by steroid treatment.
Even more exciting is the use of K 2 in a variety of malignancies—liver, breast, prostate myeloma and acute myelogenous leukemia! And it has been effective in reversing myelodysplastic syndrome, a precursor of leukemia. Here again the dose may need to be 45 mg daily instead of 200 mcg.
And perhaps the most exciting effect of K 2 is in REVERSING as well as helping to prevent atherosclerosis.
Of course, those who are on coumadin to prevent blood clotting should not take extra K 2.
The bottom line—K 2, 100 to 200 mcg per day, is one essential supplement for its broad health enhancing benefits!
