The government recommended intake of 60 mg of vitamin C daily is amazingly inadequate for optimal health. In the ’70s Emanuel Cheraskin showed that those who took 1000 mg daily were overall healthier. Personally, I have prescribed the use of up to 100 grams of C intravenously, in a Myers cocktail. I have prescribed it daily for two to four weeks to reduce bone pain in metastatic cancer patients. I have also prescribed it to treat virus infections or cancer itself.
Any time you take more than 100 mg of C daily, you need to increase B 6 intake.
To increase your B 6 intake, take a minimum of 25 mg and up to 100 mg daily.
There is evidence of some additional antioxidant benefit from the quercetin often found with C in fruits and veggies. However, Szent-Gyorgi discovered that ascorbic acid is pure vitamin C. He took 10 grams daily.
Interestingly, I discovered that vitamin C needs MSM to help restore DHEA. Thus Dr. sHEALy’s Youth Formula, in the daily dose of four capsules, contains 2000 mg of C, 1000 mg of MSM, 60 mcg of molybdenum and small amounts of beta 1-3 glucan. This raises DHEA levels an average of 60%. Of course, I recommend taking it with at least one of my Essentials, to be sure you get the B 6 required with an increased intake of vitamin C.
Interestingly, there is also good evidence that ordinarily A, C and E work synergistically to optimize the antioxidant effects of the others. Thus for those with allergies, I strongly advise my Youth Formula, my Essentials, plus astaxanthin for A, and Kyani Sunset for the E.
