THYROID HEALTH

C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D.

The three super essential glands are gonads, adrenal and thyroid, all interdependent and all ultimately managed by the pituitary gland.  But it is the thyroid that creates the most compelling symptoms. The common dysfunction is under activity, easily measured by taking your oral temperature between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.  If it is consistently below 98.6 Fahrenheit, you are hypothyroid! Symptoms range all over the place–fatigue, weakness, immune problems, low energy, with high cholesterol levels, low or high blood pressure, weight gain, edema of legs, etc.

If you have any of these problems and your tempeature is low, I would start with either one Iodoral or one Swanson Triple Iodine capsule each week for 6 weeks. If that does not bring your temperature up to normal, add Fire Bliss once daily. If your temperature is still low, be sure that a physician checks your thyroid manually to be certain there is not a small nodule, which needs to be evaluated carefully to rule out the most curable of all cancers, thyroid. Certainly worth ruling out Hashimoto’s thyroiditis at that time. If those are excluded, gradually increase the iodine uptake to one daily for a month.

If you are on thyroid medication and want to wean, after a month, cut thyroid medication in half and, after the second month stop the thyroid medication.  If your temperature remains normal, you are OK. If judicious use of Fire Bliss and Iodine do not work, you may need thyroid medication forever.

Just as a reminder, even if your thyroid function is normal, all adults will do well to take daily one Iodoral or Swanson’s Triple Iodine. Fukushima is NOT going away!!
