TENS FOR PAIN CONTROL ?
C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D.
?
I am amazed at the failure of a majority of physicians and Emergency Rooms to use TENS, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, to treat pain! Since the mid 60's it has been the treatment of choice. It is far safer than any drug and reduces pain without snowing consciousness!? Between 1966 and 1974 I demonstrated, first in animals and then in people, that electrical stimulation controls acute localized pain at least 80 to 90% of the time and focal chronic pain at least 50% of the time.
?
I demonstrated in pregnant women that the pain of labor could be adequately controlled virtually up to the delivery itself in a majority of women.
?
Since that time, I have used TENS in many thousands of patients. Two days ago I learned that a friend had had a severe right shoulder injury. She was given a sling and narcotics to use for pain. I went over to her home and applied the Shealy Pain Pro TENS behind and in front of the shoulder. Today she told me that this has been “wonderful” in relieving her pain and allowing her to be up and active. Another example is that of a woman who had a horse step on her foot. It was almost immediately swollen to twice normal size. Overnight I suggested ice packs and a TENS. The following morning she was able to walk on the foot and it healed rapidly with continuing use of the TENS.
?
Or another woman fractured her wrist in a fall. The Shealy Pain Pro was applied within an hour, with electrodes above and below the fracture site. She was placed in a supportive brace and continued to use the TENS about 2 hours a day. Her fracture was solidly healed within 5 weeks instead of the usual 8 weeks. Her orthopedist was not impressed and suggested she come back in 3 more weeks for a final X-ray!? Don't ask!!
?
There is no question that healing is much faster when pain is controlled in this way. Indeed, in the unusual situation where a fracture does not heal, some orthopedists actually then apply a special TENS which assists in the healing!? I say, why not use it at the beginning in every acute injury!
?
Although there are a variety of TENS units, the Shealy Pain Pro is unique in its electrical output. It is the ONLY TENS that has been proven to stimulate acupuncture points better than needles. When applied to specific acupuncture circuits it can raise DHEA, which is low or deficient in virtually all chronic pain disorders. It can raise calcitonin, the most potent pain reliever produced in the body-40 to 60 times as strong as morphine!? If you or any family member has an ?acute pain problem, INSIST upon the use of TENS or fire the physician and find one with some sense other than drugs!
