C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D.
Forty-two years ago an insurance company asked me to “package” what I did. Interestingly Dr. Elmer Green and I had been discussing our concept of developing self-regulation centers to offer major stress-reduction, self-regulation tools. As usual with the insurance mafia, it did not work out in 1974. Still today, as for at least the past century, the major cause of illness and premature death is STRESS-physical, chemical, emotional, and today, electromagnetic and nuclear!
As I mention frequently, Dr. John Knowles wrote in the late ’70s that “95% of people are born healthy and become unhealthy because of human misbehavior”. That misbehavior includes obesity, smoking, crummy nutrition and inactivity. Only 3% of Americans have the 4 most essential habits—normal weight, no smoking, minimum of 5 servings daily of fruits and veggies, exercise a minimum of 30 minutes 5 days a week. My impression is that the reason people neglect themselves is anxiety, depression and a lack of adequate self-esteem, or just plain stress.
It is increasingly obvious that the current medical system is totally incapable of adequately taking care of the multiple diseases created by stress and poor habits—namely hypertension, diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, cancer, depression, anxiety and most chronic pain. Indeed, for any one of those problems, I personally would not accept the usual medical recommendations!
Fortunately, at age 83 I do not have any of those problems.
