NITRIC OXIDE, THE ESSENTIAL ENERGY MOLECULE

Nitric oxide is one of the most universal molecules of life in plants, bacteria and all animals. It has many benefits including inhibition of pathological bacterial growth and most importantly, relaxation-dilation of blood vessels. Two of the earliest drugs, nitroglycerine and amyl nitrite, have been used for many decades to treat angina pectoris because of their rapid benefit in dilating coronary arteries. Normally, nitric oxide is produced in the body mainly by bacteria which convert nitrites and nitrates to nitric oxide. There is also a mechanism for production of nitric oxide from L-arginine; and, interestingly, L-citrulline can be converted into L-arginine to assist in more rapid production of nitric oxide. All these mechanisms require an acid environment. On skin ultraviolet light enhances the conversion of nitrites to nitric oxide. In blood, where the pH is alkaline, nitric oxide synthesis is assisted by the L-arginine substrate.
Nitrites and nitrates are present in many green leafy vegetables and in beets. Interestingly nitrites and nitrates have been used for millennia to help reserve meats. Excessive intake of these added nitrates and nitrites can be toxic but can be moderated by taking adequate vitamin C.
