MOVE or DIE YOUNGER!
C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D.

I repeatedly remind everyone that the 4 essentials of health are

No smoking—-about 74% of adults
BMI 18-24—-only one-third of Americans
5 servings or more of fruits/veggies daily—perhaps 25% of Americans
Exercise at least 30 minutes 5 days a week–only 10% of Americans!

Only 3% of Americans have all 4 habits!!

Now there is even greater evidence that INACTIVITY is fatal! In the July 22, 2010, Journal of Epidemiology, in a study of 123,216 people, followed 14 years, women who spent 6 hours a day sitting had a 37% increased risk of dying, compared with those who spent 3 hours sitting! For men, the increased risk was only 17%! Those who did some exercise had? benefit if they sat 6 hours. And who knows about those who sit 8 or more hours! It appears that sitting screws up your hormonal metabolism, triglycerides and cholesterol. Interestingly those who sat a lot and did not exercise at all had a 94% increased mortality in women and a 48% increased mortality in men!! And imagine the increase if followed more than 14 years!!! The main increase in death was from heart disease—still the number one popular way to die.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS YOU CANNOT AFFORD THE “LUXURY” OF SITTING ALL DAY. Couch potato may be even worse than French fried potatoes!

At the very least you should stand and BOUNCE at least 3 minutes every hour!
