GERD-FREE with d-LIMONENE (C)

C. Norman Sheasly, M.D.,Ph.D.

Significant heartburn is a major problem for which the proton pump inhibitors (PPI) have gained the number three spot on the PharmacoMafia’s income list! The problem with the little purple pill and its clones is that they block a major immune defense–hydrochloric acid (HCL). Hydrochloric acid is essential for proper digestion of protein and is a remarkable protector from ingested bacteria, etc. Individuals who take these drugs regularly Prilosec (R); Nexium (R) is?not significantly better than Prilosec but many times more expensive; Prevacid (R); Protonix (R), etc have a marked increase in pneumonia and other infections. Furthermore, in the long run they will wind up B 12 deficient, as HCL is essential for absorption of B 12!

There are many alternatives and other approaches which can assist in management of GERD–Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder. Obviously it is best to start with stress reduction, smaller meals, avoiding spicy foods and alcohol, etc.

The safest and least expensive protection from GERD is d-Limonene. This extract of orange peel coats the stomach and may help you recover completely from GERD. You can take it once or twice a day.

If you are dependent on a proton pump inhibitor, I suggest you continue while adding d-Limonene twice a day. After several days try cutting the PPI to every other day for a week and then every third day, etc, weaning slowly. Even if you can cut only to every other day, you have given your body extra immune protection. And under the best of circumstances, you can wean entirely!
