When I started the first Pain Rehabilitation Center in 1971, my major goal was to keep patients occupied with scheduled and mostly relaxing therapy a minimum of 8+ hours daily. In 1973, I added biofeedback and autogenic training and in 1994, in addition to physical approaches with massage, hydrotherapy, acupuncture and exercise, I added biofeedback, which evolved into Biogenics®, my expansion of Autogenic Training to include the full range of self-regulation tools I extracted from 350 books and at least a dozen workshops. For the next 30 years, patients who entered the intensive 2-week program were immersed in deep relaxation and self-regulation training for at least 4 hours daily. I called it immersion therapy and consider that intensity significantly responsible for our 85% success rate in treating over 30,000 patients who had failed conventional medicine.

A recent article in the Journal of Psychoneuroimmunology has reported that a full day of mindfulness meditation in experienced meditators can change gene-regulating activity and reduce levels of pro-inflammatory genes. We have known since Benson’s work in the 70’s that just 40 minutes of deep relaxation daily can lower adrenalin production and insulin requirement by 50% for the entire 24 hours. The latest work takes up beyond chemistry to epigenetic modulation.
