As I have emphasized for over 20 years, conscientiousness is the single greatest factor in health and longevity. Sadly, only 3% of Americans are conscientious at the basic level. That is, only 3% have taken basic personal responsibility for these 4 habits:
- Do not smoke
- Have a BMI of 18-24
- Eat 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily
- Exercise a minimum of 30 minutes 5 days a week
This means that 97% of people are irresponsible in relation to their own health and double medical insurance costs for everyone!
The 22% of smokers have over twice the overall medical problems of non-smokers.
The 67% of overweight and obese people have at least twice the medical problems of the one-third of those with normal weight.
The average American eating only 2.2 servings of fruits and veggies per day has significant increases in a weak immune system, cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
The 90% of Americans not getting that paltry 3.5 hours of exercise a week have increased rates of heart disease, diabetes, depression and cancer.
Nothing is more important than personal health.
If the 97% of less responsible and less conscientious Americans just converted to the 4 common sense responsible habits, average life expectancy would increase 22 years (average 100) within 20 to 25 years. Medical expenses for the country would decrease at least 50%.
Of course, then McDonald’s and its clones, the tobacco industry, the pop industry, the sugar industry, and even the PharmacoMafia, might go bankrupt. They survive because of the 97% of individuals lacking personal responsibility for their own health. You cannot be conscientious/responsible unless you adopt the 4 essential habits.
