What To Do If You’re Eating Healthy But Gaining Weight

Woman standing on a scale.

So many people struggle with their weight that obesity is almost ubiquitous. This is a very sad situation as having a BMI greater than XX is a predictor of disease and early death. Luckily, more and more Americans are making the switch to healthy eating to lose weight. However, not all are losing their unwanted weight. If that’s you, it’s time to understand why you’re eating healthy but gaining weight.

When you look at weight gain from a holistic perspective, there are many reasons you may be gaining weight despite eating healthy.

In our practice, we look at everything going on in our patient’s lives to have the best understanding of how to help them lose weight or heal. We even question assumptions.

And the first assumption everyone makes when they say they’re eating healthy but gaining weight is that they know what healthy nutrition is. So, let’s start there.

Healthy Nutrition

What is healthy nutrition? In simplest terms, healthy eating looks like this:

  • Seventy percent of your food should be non-carbohydrate vegetables
  • Ten percent should be real fruits
  • Twenty percent should be eggs, dairy, beef, chicken, pork, or fish. NOTE: this does not include “processed” meat like sausage and lunchmeat.

If you’re gaining weight on this diet, then you are either eating too many calories or have something else going on.

We also know that it’s common to have “cheat days.” If you do, then you must be aware of all the foods that you still must avoid.

Much of the food quickly available to us is junk. This includes most “fast foods”, wheat, rice, Irish potatoes, and sugar! ALL boxed cereals are junk!

Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG) is a poison used to addict you and is in many ‘prepared’ foods, including that in Asian restaurants, canned soups, chips and snack foods. Many manufacturers use MSG to boost the savory flavor of chips, seasoning blends, frozen meals, soups, processed meats, condiments, and instant noodle products.

The reason you must avoid MSG consumption it that it’s been linked to obesity, liver damage, blood sugar fluctuations, elevated heart disease risk factors, behavioral problems, nerve damage, and increased inflammation.

So, even if you choose to incorporate a cheat day here and there, when it comes to healthy nutrition you need to be aware of the junk that’s available so you can avoid it and reduce the risk of gaining weight.

If you truly are adhering to eating healthy and aren’t consuming too many calories, then it’s time to explore other factors that could be contributing to your weight gain.

Lack of Sleep

Sleep deprivation is a major contributor to weight gain. If you’re sleeping less than 7 hours every night you are at greater risk for weight gain and obesity. Researchers have found that sleep deprivation causes growth hormone deficiency, elevated cortisol levels and altered endocannabinoid levels all of which have been linked to obesity.

Insufficient Activity

Another major contribution to weight gain despite eating healthy is inactivity. You need a minimum of 30 minutes of physical exercise 5 days a week and more is better!

Sitting all day using a “dumb phone” or watching TV is as unhealthy as smoking one or two packs of cigarettes daily!

Move it or lose your health.

Unrelieved Stress

Physical, mental, emotional, and chemical stress are major invitations to weight gain and obesity.

The first step in relieving stress is choosing to use your time wisely. Theoretically you may work 8 hours, take up to two hours going to and from work, 90 minutes for eating, 8 hours for sleep, half an hour for bathing, an hour for physical exercise, and an hour for major stress reduction. That gives you 3 hours of leisure, fun or pleasure.

Major stress reduction is best done with Autogenic Training and Ideal Weight from the Biogenics® Course.

And there is the ultimate assistant, the Shealy-Sorin Gamma PEMF®, the world’s most effective regulator of your entire electrical system.

Perhaps years of inattention to habits and well-being have left you with anxiety that’s lead to weight gain despite eating healthy. Having anxiety means your electrical control is out of balance. The Gamma PEMF resets the thermostat of relaxation, optimizing your entire physiology, and reducing stress at all levels.

It provides overall better brain function, improved circulation, decreased inflammation, enhanced immunity, improved bone and joint function, optimal digestive function, and improved sleep quality.

Healthy cells have a higher electrical charge. Every cell is replaced within a maximum of seven years, so when you have healthy cells your electrical regenerative plasticity is optimal.

The body runs at a -20 to -25 millivolts. When voltage drops below -20 millivolts, chronic illness exists, and healing requires -50 millivolts. PEMF optimizes all healing, correcting cellular dysfunction throughout the body, increasing overall energy, reducing inflammation and pain.

With the Shealy-Sorin Gamma PEMF® you can address your unwanted weight gain, but also optimize your entire life energy. r

Low DHEA

A significant contribution to weight gain and obesity is low DHEA, dehydroepiandrosterone. DHEA is the antistress hormone and helps address adrenal burnout.

DHEA levels typically decline with age, so it often needs to be replenished. There are 4 major tools for restoring DHEA. These include Fire Bliss, Shealy-Sorin Eco Green Essentials, Shealy-Sorin Youth Formula, and Shealy-Sorin Eugesterone cream. You can also purchase all of these tools in either the DHEA Restoration Package for women or the DHEA Restoration Package for men.

(Interestingly, using Fire Bliss and Water Bliss daily can help weight loss of one half to one pound weekly.)

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) is a fairly common condition where the thyroid doesn’t create and release enough thyroid hormones.

There are several tests for diagnosing hypothyroidism. However, the best test for thyroid function is your oral temperature. It should be 98.6 degrees within 2 hours after wakening. If your temperature is below 98.6 degrees, you are hypothyroid.

The lab tests for thyroid function (TSH and T4) are totally inaccurate if you drink fluoridated water. Neither your body nor the lab can distinguish between fluoride and iodine!

Hypothyroidism has many negative effects in addition to obesity. These can include hair loss, fatigue, difficulty thinking, dry skin, increased sensitivity to cold, and many others.

Simply eating healthy doesn’t guarantee that you will lose unwanted weight or even maintain your ideal weight. As holistic physicians we know that there are many other factors that can contribute to weight gain. And now you know a few to address if you’re eating healthy and still gaining weight.

Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D. is the father of holistic medicine. Dr. Sergey Sorin is a holistic physician as well as the CEO and medical director of the Shealy-Sorin Wellness Institute. Both doctors recommend the Biogenics® System as part of your overall commitment to health.
