Dr. Norman Shealy, MD, PhD, and Dr. Sergey Sorin, MD, talk about how PEMF therapy works and who can benefit from it. P.S. If you enjoy videos more than reading, scroll to the bottom and watch our video on What is PEMF therapy!
Many people have never heard of PEMF therapy, an innovative treatment with numerous benefits and proven clinical success. When doctors use it correctly, PEMF therapy can help ease pain, speed up the healing of bone fractures, improve internal organ function, and boost overall health and wellness.
PEMF Stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy
PEMF stands for pulsed electromagnetic field. Another, less frequently used term is LFMS, or low field magnetic stimulation. Both terms refer to gentle magnetic energy waves that can palliate cellular dysfunction, reduce pain intensity, and promote faster tissue healing.
How Does PEMF Therapy Work?
In a nutshell, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy uses low-level electromagnetic pulses to reinforce the natural magnetic field in all cells of your body. The PEMF stimulates the cell to allow nutrients to properly flow into the cell and waste to be properly expelled from the cell. This allows the cells to function more optimally than without the PEMF stimulation. See the example photo below.
For example, in the case of a bone fracture, PEMF therapy exposes the bone-forming cells to a mild pulsed electromagnetic field and forms an electrical field overlapping the cell membrane. This boost in the cell’s electromagnetic charge helps activate several biochemical pathways, like enhanced cell proliferation and cell maturity, which stimulate bone growth.
The various PEMF devices on the market are typically designed to target the affected area, such as a fracture or inflammation site, in a localized way. A PEMF therapy session is painless and involves no discomfort for the patient. Essentially, the patient rests on the treatment bed, and the PEMF machine does the work. Most patients report feeling relaxed during the treatment and energized after PEMF treatment.
Our PEMF therapy device has been specifically created with ease of use in mind for the patient. It is portable and small enough to take practically anywhere with you. I bring mine in my briefcase to the office daily. Our 8 inch coil also makes it easy to target your exact area of need. Don’t worry that it is not a “mat” type as our unit emits enough pulsed electromagnetic field that it will cover your whole body and even some to the person sitting next to you if there is one!
What Are The Benefits of PEMF Therapy?
To function optimally, healthy cell membranes need to have a balance between negative and positive magnetic charges. A correct magnetic balance enables normal ion exchange and the intracellular transfer of vital elements like potassium, calcium & other nutrients. It also allows the cells to properly expel waste.
Cell membranes can experience disturbances in their electromagnetic fields for a variety of reasons. When cells’ voltage drops, ion exchange becomes impaired, which can lead to electrolyte imbalance and a host of symptoms like fatigue, inflammation, chronic pain & more. We call this a state of not optimally functioning.
The PEMF technology can boost the electromagnetic charges by reinforcing electromagnetic charges in the cells and thus help the body’s natural healing processes. PEMF stimulation may assuage cellular dysfunction, stimulate neuronal repair, and improve blood flow.
We have extensively studied and clinically proven our specific range of frequency that our PEMF therapy uses. Pulsed electromagnetic frequency is measured in hertz.
Additionally, the benefits of PEMF include:
- Increased Energy
- Faster recovery times from injuries & strains
- Reduced pain & inflammation
- Improved athletic performance
- Better blood circulation
- Nerve & tissue regeneration
Who Is PEMF Therapy For?
Below are just a few examples of who can benefit from PEMF therapy.
Anyone looking for Holistic Anti-Aging & better health as you age
PEMF Therapy promotes cellular function. It allows your cells to reproduce easier & work more efficiently. Who would NOT want this in their day to day life?
That is why we say PEMF therapy is for anyone and everyone!
Severe and Chronic Pain
Double-blind, randomized controlled trial studies have shown a clinically meaningful, significant reduction in severe pain intensity in the PEMF group compared to the placebo group.
In simpler words, PEMF can contribute to effective pain management. PEMF therapy slows the activity of pain and inflammatory mediators in the body. Thanks to stimulation by electromagnetic waves, pain decreases in a range of conditions, including knee osteoarthritis, back pain, neuropathic pain and others.
In many cases, patients suffering from chronic pain have unsuccessfully tried every type of conventional treatment before turning to alternative therapy. PEMF provides a gentle, effective pain relief solution while reducing the need for harmful drugs.
PEMF should no longer be considered just an alternative therapy, rather as a go-to main solution to chronic pain!
Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy
Diabetic neuropathy is one of the most common complications of diabetes. The PEMF technology can help reduce diabetic neuropathic pain through its positive effect on damaged cells. The electrical stimulation increases blood flow, helps mitigate cellular dysfunction, and promotes normal cell interaction. As a result, faster tissue healing occurs, along with pain relief.
Anterior cervical fusion treated with pulsed electromagnetic fields was significantly quicker and more effective in the PEMF group compared to control groups.
Similarly, bone fracture patients treated with pulsed magnetic field therapy showed significant improvement in bone fusion speed.
Anxiety & Depression
PEMF has been shown in studies to alleviate anxiety & depression. We have experienced the same in our own clinic.
Athletes are always looking for an edge to grow stronger & faster than their competition. What better way than supercharging your cells? Many star athletes already use PEMF to recover faster, train longer and perform better.
What Are the Frequencies of PEMF Therapy?
Electromagnetic field frequency uses the Hertz (Hz) units to measure cycles per second. Usually, PEMF systems use long wavelengths and low frequencies, with a typical range of 1 Hz to 1,000 Hz and very rarely higher. Magnetic fields with frequencies below 3,000 Hz count as ELF (extremely low frequency).
Our specific PEMF therapy has 3 different settings. The Shealy-Sorin Sweep at 5.83Hz through 56.6Hz, The Gamma Sweep at 38 through 54Hz for increased cognitive activity, and the Delta Sweep at 1 to 3Hz for sleep and relaxation, a wavelength that mimics that of when your brain is in deep REM sleep.
Where Can You Have PEMF Therapy?
PEMF therapy now forms part of the treatment range in many clinical settings, including physical therapy clinics, sports medicine centers, chiropractic offices, and massage therapy clinics. Many people even purchase a PEMF machine to use for self-healing in a home setting.
PEMF therapy is non-invasive, highly safe, and has no known side effects. Stimulation devices that use the PEMF technology received FDA approval in 2007.
Please note that there are contraindications to PEMF exposure in certain groups, namely pregnant women and patients with implanted electrical devices like pacemakers or insulin pumps. PEMF may also be unsafe in patients with organ transplants.
What Are the Best PEMF Therapy Devices?
With so many PEMF devices now on the market, it is important to research every model’s properties before deciding on a purchase. We highly recommend purchasing a device from a reliable resource with professional clinical training and deep knowledge of the pulsed electromagnetic field stimulation technology.
