THE OPIOID PLAGUE

When I went out of the box in 1971, my average patient had had 5 to 7 unsuccessful back operations and was on Percodan® and Valium® and was an invalid! They should never have had the second operation and in 80% I determined by reviewing original operative and x-ray notes they should not have had the first one. The biggest challenge was to wean them from the harmful narcotics and tranquilizers and then to retrain the nervous system. The first year we succeeded in 75% of the patients. Over the next several years our success rate increased to 80 and eventually to 85% of patients. NARCOTICS BY ANY OTHER NAME ARE STILL NARCOTICS AND SEVERELY DANGEROUS AND USELESS IN CHRONIC BENIGN PAIN!

Here we are 45 years later and the PharmacoMafia has won the opium war. They far outweigh Afghanistan in producing harm. A recent study demonstrated that “Evidence on long term efficacy (in chronic back pain) is lacking”!! Indeed “The efficacy of opioid analgesics in acute low back pain is unknown”.
