I have long been a sun worshiper, that is I feel great being outside in sunlight. I know of nothing that can boost my mood as quickly and as well as an hour outside. I have never wanted to use sunblock and I do not burn.

There are several adjuncts to avoid sun burning:

  • Use PABA orally, 2000 mg 30 minutes before you go outside and, of course, even then increase exposure slowly
  • Take at least 10 mg of astaxanthin daily, to help protect the skin

Doing this and building up slowly, I can easily spend 2 to 4 hours outside without a shirt, tanning slowly and working in my garden. The evidence is overwhelming that non-burning suntan is not harmful and is indeed one of the greatest mood enhancers. Doing it right does NOT increase risk of melanoma!

We have known since the early ’80s that ultraviolet light activates the production of beta endorphin by the skin. We also know that ultraviolet stimulates the skin to produce nitric oxide, the most critical chemical for immune strength, cardiovascular health and energy! This endorphin production is so good that it provides significant pain relief for patients with fibromyalgia. All this is in addition to the production of vitamin D 3, another overall health essential. Actually, the skin produces all the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis homeostatic hormones—corticotrophin releasing hormone, proopiomelanocortin, ACTH, & beta-endorphin, (Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab, 2011, 301: E484-493)

So, as with everything, moderation is essential! LOVE THAT SUN!!!
