PROBIOTICS ?

Some 56 years ago , I learned in medical school that individuals on even those early day antibiotics, needed Probiotics. The commercially available one then was Lactinex, containing lactobacillus acidophilus. I have always recommended it, and later the more comprehensive probiotics, to all patients taking antibiotics. It needs to be taken at least two hours away from taking an oral antibiotic. The old standard is still available but I think Gr8-Dophilus is the best today..

The intestines contain over 400 useful bacteria and the balance between them is critically important. These GOOD bacteria are one of the most important factors in a healthy immune system. Because of the rather frequent use of antibiotics and many other factors, normal gut flora are frequently upset. Indeed, low grade intestinal inflammation from inadequate gut flora may be a “cause” of many diseases-ranging from peptic ulcer, where Heliobacter pylori takes over. H. Pylori is even one of the contributors to atherosclerosis. One of the most interesting studies demonstrated that children in day care had marked rreduction in a variety of infections if they were given probiotic milk!

Yogurt, especially unsweetened yogurt, is one of the best foods for many individuals, as it has largely had digested all the lactose. Most people who cannot drink milk tolerate yogurt well. Yogurt can be used vaginally to treat yeast infections. Cultured buttermilk and especially Bulgarian style cultured buttermilk are also terriic. More importantly, those who regularly eat fermented milk products:

  • Reduce harmful bacteria in the bowel
  • Reduce the number of cancer-producing substances in urine and stool
  • Have less constipation and less diarrhea
  • Decrease yeast infections, including candidiasis
  • Lower LDL cholesterol
  • Reduce the incidence of traveler's diarrhea
  • Reduce inflammation?

Failure to drink milk, especially in the two-thirds of individuals who lack lactase, is another potential cause of inadequate gut flora. Although lactobacillus acidophilus is perhaps the best known, there are a variety of friendly bacteria. The most common Probiotics used today include:

  • Lactobacillus acidophilus
  • Lactobacillus casei
  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus
  • Lactobacillus salvarius
  • Staphylococcus thermophilus
  • Bifidobacterium bifidum
  • Bifidobacterium longus
  • Bifidobacterium lactis

It is most important, if you take probiotic capsules, that you use ones that are stable at room temperature!? Personally I take??
