Methyl Folate

Folic acid is one of the critically essential B vitamins, involved in almost every aspect of metabolism. In the 1970’s it was reported that increased cholesterol caused by milk fat could be reduced by taking huge doses of folic acid-up to 80 mg. That was before our knowledge of genes and the occasional MTHFR methyl defect. Other than these individuals, methyl folate is better metabolized than folic acid. For those with elevated cholesterol, it may pay to take 20 mg of folic acid and one mg of methyl folate. Folate is as critical as B 12 for brain and spinal cord function.
