IRRITABLE AND OTHER BOWEL PROBLEMS

C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D.

?Do you have any of these:

  • Constipation, with or without intermittent diarrhea
  • Diarrhea
  • Foul smelling stools
  • Gaseousness
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal pain or bloating
  • Restless sleep, with grinding of teeth
  • More than 2 or 3 bowel movements daily
  • Rectal/anal itching
  • Indigestion
  • Tired most of the time

There are many possibilities for these symptoms and most physician evaluations reveal nothing. Obviously at least one physician evaluation should be done before you reach for alternatives. And of course any food allergy can cause all these problems and more. You should always avoid wheat, gluten, corn, citrus, milk and peanuts for a month as a first attempt at control of such problems.

Next I would add glutamine powder, one teaspoon each meal and good probiotics,  4 to 8 daily.

If all these fail to help greatly, and GI symptoms persist, especially if you have 2 or 3 of these symptoms, I strongly recommend Enzyme Formulations’ Formula # 29 . It is one of the safest and most effective regulators of bowel function. Start with one teaspoon in a glass of water first thing in the morning. You will need to explore various dosages, up to two rounded tablespoons twice daily, taken between meals, to find the proper dose for your system.

FOLLOW-UP
After reading your article on “Short Leg Syndrome,” I drove over to Clearwater, Florida to see Paul St. John as you suggested. I have worn a heel lift for a short leg for over 20 years, but I still suffered from back and neck pain. Paul showed me how the lift I was wearing was causing my pelvis and spine to twist. No wonder I was in pain! After using the full length 6 mm lift in my shoe, I began to feel much better. In the beginning I had some pain in my sacrum but that went away. The noticeable change was that I no longer felt pain in my neck. I am also using the lift for the pelvis (7mm) so I can sit straight as well. When I returned to see Paul, I began treatment with his Integrative Neurosomatic Therapy. I have had numerous types of massages in the past including Rolfing, but Paul’s technique is the most effective I have ever experienced. He helped my whole spine and neck feel much better, but the most amazing result I had was in my abdominal area. In 2001, following surgery for appendicitis, I developed large scars and adhesions. Traditional gastroenterologists just told me that there was nothing they could do. However, after only a half hour of intensive work, Paul made my intestines feel much freer and there is less pulling and stiffness. Now I no longer wake up around 5:00 in the morning with pain as my colon prepares to eliminate. Even my chronic dysbiosis is better. Thank you for letting us know about Paul St. John’s amazing therapy!
