Hypertension is a major reaction to total life stress, so the most important way to control it safely is stress reduction. And knowing how to safely get off blood pressure medication is, for many, closely linked to learning how to effectively reduce stress.
You need to know you are not alone in your struggle with high blood pressure. Forty percent of adult Americans have it.
By taking up to 3 antihypertensive drugs you have a 45% chance of control with an almost 90% chance of having chronic fatigue and in males, erectile dysfunction. So, it makes perfect sense that you would be curious about how to get off blood pressure medication to be able to feel more like yourself.
Before going any further in our discussion, you must know there are numerous safety issues that must be considered before getting off blood pressure medication. Therefore, weaning from these medications should be done under the guidance of a holistic physician.
Yet there are things you can do to prepare yourself for working with your physician.
The first is to understand your total life stress. Stress is a unique individual issue. In fact, your basic personality strongly influences how you react to stress. If you are ordinarily a calm, happy person, you can handle more stress than someone who is hyperactive!
One way to understand your total life stress is to take our Total Life Stress and Symptom Index. If your stress level is above 20 or you have 20 or more symptoms, you need major stress reduction.
The most basic and often the most effective stress control is autogenic training. By practicing autogenic training for 18 minutes twice daily, you can make tremendous strides in controlling your stress. Autogenic training is 100% safe and helps almost all problems. You can learn more about it on our site. And if you’re looking for stress management exercises for specific issues, you will want to explore the Biogenics® course.
Those who practice autogenic training have significant control of hypertension (high blood pressure) 90% of the time.
Another tip for preparing yourself to get off blood pressure medication is exercise – moderate exercise. Most people who do at least 30 minutes of moderate physical exercise at least five days a week have significantly lower blood pressure than those who either do not exercise or exercise less.
Interestingly, just taking adequate supplements may help significantly in your efforts to prepare for working with your holistic physician to get off blood pressure medication. This includes Shealy-Sorin Eco-Green Essentials and Shealy-Sorin Essentials. If that these supplements prove inadequate, add L-taurine at a dosage of 2000 mg three times daily and Biogenics® Magnesium Lotion, two teaspoons twice daily.
If you have hypertension, you are probably missing some key health essentials.
For instance, are you overweight?
Having a Body Mass Index above 24 suggests you need to cut out wheat, rice, potatoes and sugar.
Do you sit all day?
Those who sit all day and do not regularly exercise have the same risk of hypertension as those who smoke a pack or two of cigarettes daily.
Are you eating 5 to 8 servings of veggies daily?
All carbohydrates and all artificially altered foods are contributors to hypertension.
Are you sleeping at least 7 or 8 hours every night?
Lack of sleep is a major contributor to overall stress.
Have you checked your Hemoglobin A-1c?
This test is essential to rule out early diabetes. Fasting blood sugar is a useless test! The Hgb A-1c gives you your average blood sugar values over the last three months. This is important to monitory because those with hypertension often have pre or early diabetes.
Are your cholesterol and triglycerides normal? Are you taking a statin drug? Is your thyroid normal? Are you taking any other medications?
All these medications factor into the safety and effectiveness of weaning from blood pressure mediations.
How much coffee are you drinking?
Caffeine raises blood pressure.
How much alcohol are you drinking?
Alcohol is a major carbohydrate contributor which often leads to weight gain which is a contributor to high blood pressure.
Preparing to get off blood pressure medication really comes down to lifestyle modification to eliminate or better deal with stress.
When you work with your holistic physician, they will not start weaning you from your medication until your blood pressure is consistently below 150/90.
So, you can start doing Autogenic Training, moderate physical exercise and weight control, the Eco-Green Essentials and Youth Formula while maintain your medications. And you can even add L-taurine while still on medications if you are in the 55% who are taking the drugs without good control!
Once your blood pressure is below 150/90 then we may advise either cutting one drug in half or to every other day for seven to ten days. After 7 to 10 days if your blood pressure is still below 150/90 then you stop that first drug and wait two weeks before cutting another drug.
